Maria Dorothea Wagner was born into an artistically gifted family. Her father was court painter to the Dowager Duchess of Saxony-Weimar, and her brother was the famous eclectic, Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, known as Dietricy. She produced, according to Thieme-Becker, “primarily river landscapes with a poetic, romantic atmosphere”.
